Schenectady

An informal (and highly biased and inaccurate) history of the Upstate New York (home of the motherfuckin hahdcore, boyee... actually mainly of Schenectady and Scotia and little bits of Saratoga and Albany) UG/HC musical type scene. roughly 1985-1993

by Marc Arsenault and his good buddy Andy Gerhan: two really nice people who you should take out for lunch sometime.

introduction

So, anyway, its a Saturday in Western Mass. me and Jeremy Lungjuice (a scumbag who I wish was dead) are snowed in at the frozen Tundra. we're listening to James Taylor and AC DC and drinking Olympia (its the water, still only 5 bucks plus deposit at most finer establishments) And the show's off tomorrow (Easthampton's Majestic Theatre: Avail, Rorsnatch etc) so here is the slick history of our lame Albany/ Schenectady/Troy scene thing as seen by Marc and Andy your hosts for the tour (plus sidebars, even - can you dig it?) (oh and yeah some additional perspective on things provided by old letters from Josh Baker and Jim Kopta and various old/dumb albany zines and by Ian(Pansy zine), Demian, Eric, Dhara, and Martín of Texas String Orchestra.) We really took a lot of time on this and worked hard, and did our research and everything, really. Well, I know it doesn't show in the final piece, but fuck it I was typing for like 45 minutes the other night when the damn computer crashed and I lost most of the thing. You're lucky I'm doing it over at all! Oh well.
