Los Straightjackets mix it up a bit on 2007's ROCK EN ESPANOL, turning away from their usual high-octane surf guitar instrumentals to focus on a batch of classic rock-&-roll tunes sung in Spanish. The project includes versions of classic, well-known tunes like "Hang On Sloopy," "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," and "Wild Thing," but the versions (many of which were adopted from interpretations by Mexican groups of the 1960s) are powered by a nice injection of contemporary muscle. Members of Los Lobos, Big Sandy & his Fly-Rite Boys, and Thee Midnighters help out on vocals, and the result is a set that's interesting historically and culturally, sure, but also swings with a great, vital spirit.
